6G is more than faster  internet. It is being designed to expand enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), ultra reliable low latency communication (URLLC), massive machine type communication (mMTC) into connectivity that enables people, devices, artificial intelligence (AI) and systems to work together seamlessly in an immersive extended-reality, through sensing, hyper-reliable low latency control for teleoperation, massive device and seamless ubiquitous connectivity. It will enable a society that is smarter, safer and more sustainable.

What may still seem like science fiction today could become reality in just a few years. The Dutch Authority for Digital Infrastructure (RDI) is contributing to this new technology development in several ways.

Working together on a safely connected future

The RDI is contributing to the development of 6G through its participation to the Future Network Services (FNS). This is a  consortium of more than 60 organisations collaborating on 6G, including companies, knowledge institutions and the government. 

RDI 6G Fieldlab

Being an FNS partner, RDI has established its 6G fieldlan. This in addition to  our IoT and AI Safety & Security Lab in Amersfoort. In this lab, RDI facilitates safe  and reliable testing of digital infrastructure, with an emphasis on risk identification, societal impact, and supporting innovative applications within the 6G ecosystem. 

The 6G fieldlab in Amersfoort is connected to the National  6G testbed infrastrucuture. The National 6G Testbed makes it possible to develop, test and validate new products and services in realistic conditions – even before 6G becomes commercially available around 2030. In this way, SMEs, government and organizations can prepare for the future of the next generation of mobile networks. As such in the RDI 6G fieldlab jointly with various organizations we test innovations in a safe environment within the bounadaries of regulatory frameworks. 

What exactly do we do in the fieldlab?

  • We test new technologies and networks. 

  • We ensure that performed testing complies with regulations, for example regarding the use of radio signals. 

  • We share our knowledge about the new technology and its impact on society. 

  • We bring different parties together to collaborate on innovations 

International cooperation

The development of 6G is taking place worldwide. The RDI works with both European and international organisations on rules, standards and agreements, so that 6G networks can work together effectively and be used safely around the world.
