Public events

What you need to know about frequencies, licences, and on-site checks

To ensure your wireless equipment functions properly, safely, and legally during events, it’s important to understand whether a licence is required and how to comply with national regulations.

Licence-free or subject to licensing?

Some equipment—such as wireless microphones and in-ear monitors (IEMs)—can often be used without a licence (vergunningsvrij). However, for other devices like intercoms, video links, and professional two-way radios, a licence (vergunningsplichtig) is often required.

  1. Licence-free use (vergunningsvrij)
Most wireless microphones and IEM systems may be used without a licence, provided they operate within the designated licence-free frequency bands.

Make sure your equipment complies with power limits and technical standards. Keep in mind that licence-free bands are shared with other users, which means interference may occur.

  2. Subject to licensing (vergunningsplichtig)
In most other cases, the use of wireless equipment requires a licence—especially for professional-grade systems. To prevent interference and to ensure a reliable operation, it is essential to apply for a licence in advance. https://www.rdi.nl/onderwerpen/public-events/using-equipment

Test and tag at the event entrance

To ensure reliable, interference-free communication during the event, all wireless equipment must undergo a Test and Tag check upon arrival at the event venue.

This includes:

  • Verifying that the device operates within legal frequency bands
  • Checking power output and compliance with technical standards
  • Tagging the device with an official event label for approved use

Only equipment that passes the check and receives a tag will be allowed to operate.

Checklist: what to prepare

  • Determine whether your equipment is licence-free (vergunningsvrij)
  • If required, apply for a licence (vergunningsplichtig)
  • Bring all devices to the Test and Tag check upon arrival
  • Use only devices that has been officially tagged
